Let's Make a Butterfly Ornament!

These instructions are translated from the original Czech instructions included in the DIY Butterfly Bead Ornament Kit. Use this translation, paired with the illustrations on the instruction sheet to make your ornament.

The Butterfly Ornament comes together easily and is a great kit for kids ages 6+ with adult help. Kids will be able to do all of the beading work, and adults should help with the wire work. Just be careful and remember that the beads are made of glass and are fragile!

Materials

To make the Butterfly ornament you will need a Butterfly Ornament Kit and a pair of scissors.

The kit includes ...

  • 10 mm Round Glass Bead x 7
  • 8mm Round Glass Bead x 1
  • 6mm Round Glass Bead x 1
  • Pear Bead x 1
  • 6-unit Banquet Bead x 4
  • 7-unit Banquet Bead x 4
  • Small Rod Bead x 2
  • Seed Bead x 1
  • Beading Wire
  • Thin Wood Skewer

Make The Butterfly Body

Cut an 8-inch length of wire.

Thread the Seed Bead onto the wire and bring the bead to the center point. Fold the wire in half around the Seed Bead, and twist to secure. (abr. 1)

Now, thread both ends of the wire through the Pear Bead, the 8mm Round Bead, and one 10mm Round Bead. (abr. 2)

Separate the wires at the top of the 10mm Round Bead and thread one Rod Bead on each wire. (abr.3)

Using the Thin Wood Skewer, make a wire loop at the top of each Rod: place the skewer behind the wire, wrap the wire around the skewer and then twist the skewer. (abr. 4)

Trim the remaining wire. Your Butterfly Body is finished! (abr.5)

Attach the Wings (1)

Cut a 12-inch length of wire.

Thread one 6-unit Banquet, one 10mm Round Bead and one 6-unit Banquet onto the wire, in that order, and bring to the center of the wire strip. (abr. 6)

Fold the wire in half so that the 10mm Round Bead is centered. Twist the wire at the base of the Banquet Beads to secure. (abr. 7)

Attach the wing to the Butterfly's body by wrapping the wire between the Pear and 8mm Round Bead. (abr. 8)

Separate the wire. On one wire, thread one 6-unit Banquet Bead and one 10 mm Round Bead. On the other wire, thread one 6-unit Banquet Bead. Form a triangle shape with the beads and twist the wires together. Trim the remaining wire. (abr. 9)

Attach the Wings (2)

Cut a 12-inch length of wire, and create the second set of wings in a similar style as the first ...

Thread one 7-unit Banquet, two 10mm Round Beads and one 7-unit Banquet onto the wire, in that order, and bring to the center of the wire strip. Bend the wire to create a triangle shape and twist the ends together at the base of the Banquet Beads to secure. Attach the wing to the Butterfly's body by wrapping the wire between the Pear and 8mm Round Bead. (abr. 10)

Separate the wire. On one wire, thread one 7-unit Banquet Bead and two 10 mm Round Beads. On the other wire, thread one 7-unit Banquet Bead. Form a triangle shape with the beads and twist the wires together. Trim the remaining wire. (abr. 11)

Finishing Touches

All that's left is to create an eyelet for hanging.

Take a 4-inch length of wire. Wrap it again between the Pear Bead and 8mm Round Bead, and twist. (abr. 12)

Thread both ends of the wire through the 6mm Round Bead. (abr. 13)

Now, using the Thin Wood Skewer, create a loop with the wire: place the skewer behind the wire, wrap the wire around the skewer and then twist the skewer. Trim the remaining wire. (abr. 14)

Position the bead to the center of the Butterfly Body, and you're all done! (abr.15)
